Statement

I photograph the hours most people sleep through — the blue minute before dawn, fog burning off the headlands, the half-second a fox decides you are not a threat. A quiet record of light, weather, and wild things, made mostly within a day's drive of San Francisco.

The best light never waits. You learn to be early, to be patient, and to be cold.

About

Self-taught, mostly self-sent. I go where the weather is doing something.

Charlie Prigan is a landscape and wildlife photographer based in San Francisco. Since 2011 he has worked almost entirely within Northern California — the headlands, the redwoods, the fog line at Ocean Beach — returning to the same handful of places until they give something up.

The work is unhurried and uncropped: available light, long waits, no bait. Prints are made by hand in small editions.
